Saturday at the Red Bull Ring Part 2 - Kiss wins first race

05. July 2014Spielberg - Black clouds moved in over the Red Bull Ring while the truck racers took their positions on the grid for the weekend’s first race. We expected the worst, but – thankfully – it stayed dry throughout the race. Polesitter Kiss took a comfortable pole-to-flag victory, followed closely by Hahn and Albacete. The defending champ finished unruffled by the relentless attacks from his Spanish rival, but their skirmishes cost both a couple of tenths of a second, allowing Kiss to pull out a four-second gap at the flag. The podium was thus decided early on. But the battles for the remaining places were hard-fought. For a long while Major, Kiss’s teammate, lay in fourth place till a drive-through penalty dropped him to 11th and promoted Lacko to fourth. Not far behind was a trio led by Bösiger with Körber and Vršecký hot on his heels. Körber’s Iveco started to leak oil, leaving a telltale stream of smoke in its trail, but this did nothing to slow the German’s forward thrust. But then, three laps from the finish, Vršecký nosed into the Iveco’s rear at the first curve following the pit straight, spinning Körber around. The swivelling Iveco collected the Mercedes of Dominique Orsini, who’d already been lapped earlier, putting the Frenchman out of the race then and there. Körber meanwhile set off immediately in a quest to regain his lost position, but he ran out of track, managing to finish only 12th.
Reinert followed Vršecký home in seventh, followed by Altenstrasser, who thus secured pole position for the second race. The last two points-place finishers were the Czech Frankie Vojtíšek (MAN) and the Renault pilot José Teodosio (POR).
Kiss and Major together got their Oxxo Racing Team onto the top step of the podium. Truck Sport Lutz Bernau (Albacete / Bösiger) and Team Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert) were second and third.
