Sunday at the Red Bull Ring – Part 1

07. July 2013Spielberg - The weather’s held up pretty well at the fourth round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship on the Red Bull Ring. The sky over Styria is slightly cloudy, and the temperature this morning has neared 25°C. The day’s activity began with the warm-up session, which MAN pilot Antonio Albacete (ESP) immediately set his stamp on with a searing lap of 1:05.297s, faster even than his polesetting lap yesterday. And, mind you, lap times in the warm-up are no indication of how fast the drivers can, and indeed will, go in the timed practice — and even in that session, the top drivers usually only go as fast as necessary to qualify for the SuperPole.
And here Albacete let up somewhat, slipping behind both Hungarian challenger Norbert Kiss and German defending champ Jochen Hahn (both MAN). Albacete’s teammate Markus Oestreich (GER) was the next qualifier for the SuperPole, followed by Czechs David Vršecký (Buggyra Freightliner) and Adam Lacko, the Swiss Markus Bösiger (both MKR Renault), the two MAN pilots Mika Mäkinen (FIN) and Benedek Major (HUN), and the Belgian Jean-Pierre Blaise (Renault).
In the ensuing SuperPole, the ultimate, no-holds-barred shootout for the top 10 positions on the starting grid, Oestreich took pole with 1:05.172s, the fastest lap of the day, a mere four-hundredths of a second ahead of Kiss. This year’s two championship leaders, Albacete and Hahn, occupy the second row, followed by Bösiger, Vršecký, Lacko, Mäkinen, Major, and Blaise.
