Friday in Albacete

01. June 2007Albacete - True to the forecast, the weather is mostly sunny with some clouds now and then, but a lot darker is the prospect for the Renault Team of Frankie Vojtisek. The driver and star of the team was taken to the hospital in his home country, Czechia, yesterday. And the team of Michael Dolaks notified that their driver fell ill, as well. So the number of drivers was reduced to 28 pilots, with David Vrsecky being the only Czech pilot left in Albacete, whereas the number of German pilots has risen because of the return of Markus Oestreich; and if you add Markus Bösiger and Egon Allgäuer – as sort of quasi-Germans, at least they have a common language – then there are even five people.
As always, the Friday is very quiet here. On the long lane of the paddock the trucks are lined up ruler-straight, but far and wide you can hardly ever catch sight of anybody. The biggest action was certainly the installation of the new engine into Jose Rodrigues’ MAN, but otherwise the teams are mainly occupied with washing their trucks and setting up their flags. And in regard to flags, Egon Allgäuer takes the biscuit. Believe it or not, but his huge flag pole stands 18 metres (59 ft) high, and this is only the “small” version. At his place in Austria there is a flag pole at hand that measures 24 metres (79 ft), which is used for very special occasions.
