Sunday at the Slovakia Ring Part 2 - Hahn wins hands down

15. July 2018Slovakiaring - By the start of Sunday’s first race a few clouds had appeared, which is probably why it was somewhat cooler than yesterday, even if the thermometer read over 30°C. Had the sun beat down directly the asphalt would have heated to over 50°, but the track temperature was a good 6° lower. You didn’t see tyres wear out as quickly as they did yesterday, when the track was shimmering with the heat. Or maybe everyone was just going easy on their tyres.
This time polesitter Lacko went for it from the word go, countering Hahn’s attacks from his vantage on the inside line into the first three corners. But Hahn wasn’t giving up, and cleaved to his rival’s crash guard for the better part of Lap 1. Before they could cross the line at the end of the lap, the Iveco pilot exploited a momentary lapse of concentration on the Czech’s part to set himself in the lead. The bantam from Altensteig duly recorded the fastest lap of the race, putting enough space behind him to take the win with no further ado.
The positions behind the two frontrunners were also decided early on. Steffi Halm in 3rd was harried by Kiss throughout and, on a couple of occasions on the final lap, it looked like the Mercedes would overtake the Iveco. But Halm managed to exit each corner with her nose ahead, and at the flag the Iveco was just 15 hundredths ahead.
Keeping himself in Kiss’s shadow, Albacete watched for the two trucks ahead of him to tangle. But that never happened, and the Spaniard had to content himself with 5th place.
Kursim came 6th, ahead of Reinert and Lenz, who – it was supposed – would start the next race from pole. Brit Oly Janes crossed the line in 9th, followed by Mercedes pilot Steffen Faas and Brereton.
But the race officials then weighed in. While the podium places stayed unchanged, Kiss, Reinert and Janes received 10 seconds each for overspeed, and Albacete was – ostensibly for exceeding the limit on more than the permissible number of occasions – disqualified altogether. Kursim consequently got promoted to 4th, followed by Lenz, Kiss, Reinert, and Faas, the tankpool24 Mercedes driver thus inheriting pole for the concluding race. The last two places in the points went to Brereton and Janes. Faas, Brereton, and Janes in that order also ascended the podium for the Grammer Truck Cup.
„Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Halm) was the top-scoring team for the second time this weekend, ahead of Buggyra Racing 1969 (Janes / Lacko) and Reinert Adventure (Lenz / Reinert).
