Sunday in Jarama Part 1 - Norbert Kiss captures final pole of the season

08. October 2017Jarama - After a real chill night, the final day of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship finally dawned here at Circuito del Jarama near Madrid. Despite the radiant sunshine, the temperature in the shade was just around 10°C during warm-up, and so the racers’ excursion onto the track at 9 am was a warming-up exercise in the truest sense of the word.
Nobody was straining themselves, though. Hungarian Norbert Kiss, fastest of the lot in his tankpool24 Mercedes, took over two minutes for that lap.
An hour later it was time for qualifying. Now the racers put in a little more strenuous effort, but their object was no higher than to qualify for the Super Pole. Czech David Vršecký drove the quickest lap in his Buggyra Freightliner, and Kiss came rumbling after. Having both of them registered times in the 1:58s, they were soon pootling back up pit lane. Following their example were the three MAN pilots Antonio Albacete, Sascha Lenz, and Steffi Halm (both GER), the Czech Adam Lacko (Buggyra Freightliner), Iveco pilot Gerd Körber (GER), the Portuguese José Rodrigues (MAN), and the two Germans André Kursim (Mercedes) and Jochen Hahn (Iveco). None of these attained the times they’d recorded the day before, but none was worried about their places in the Super Pole – and, as it turned out, there was no need for them to.
After a five-minute pause they were back out for the shootout – but this time the competitive urge was fully unleashed.
Kiss immediately blazed to the top of the timing monitor with the fastest lap of the weekend, a 1:57.988, and Lacko came up within five hundredths on his second. The rest too went all out. At the end the seven fastest were separated by less than a second.
Polesitter Kiss and new champion Lacko will start Race 3 ahead of reigning champ Hahn and Albacete, Vršecký and Steffi Halm, Lenz and Körber, and José Rodrigues and Kursim.
