Sunday in Le Mans Part 2 - Facile win helps Lacko close championship gap to Albacete

29. September 2019Le Mans - The rain persisted till before the start of Race 3. It wasn’t particularly heavy, but there was enough water on the track to start under yellow flags before the racers would be allowed to go for it. The winner was as good as decided at this point.
At the end of the control lap, Lacko was already a good distance ahead of Kursim, who seemed to be rather interested in interposing as large a gap between Albacete and Kiss behind him and Lacko in front of him, than trying to catch up with the leader himself. Lacko launched the moment the race was green-lighted, and stretched his lead to 5.5 seconds at the finish. Kursim, by contrast, decided he would control the pace of his evidently quicker pursuers, and succeeded for a couple of laps. But then Albacete discovered a small opening, went for it, and shot ahead. Kiss wanted to follow in tow, but Kursim had closed the door by then. The Mercedes pilot made repeated attempts to overtake, but was thwarted at every turn, even as Albacete proceeded to pull away.
Lenz and Hahn, meanwhile, caught up and the four rounded the final corner at the end of Lap 3 in formation like a hand of cards, Lenz as far forward as Kursim’s rear wheel, Kiss attempting to overtake his former teammate around the outside. The Iveco and the Mercedes made hard contact and yawed, Lenz lifted off, and Kiss landed off the track, his steering damaged. That put an end to the Hungarian’s race, and Kursim managed to shake Lenz off for a space. All this while, the gap to Albacete continued to grow.
Lenz and Hahn presently came on strong again. The MAN pilot sought the slightest weakness he could exploit, but Kursim blocked him at every attempt. It was Hahn who finally took matters into his hands and overtook both Lenz and Kursim in one swoop, with Lenz following him past Kursim in a fluid reflex. Over the rest of the race, Hahn and Lenz clocked a good two seconds faster per lap. The podium was settled, Hahn helping himself to third place at the hapless Lenz’s expense.
The fight for P6 involved another knot of trucks headed by Janes. Steffi Halm, right behind him, appeared quicker, but she could find no way past the Brit – till the final lap, on which she pulled ahead along the main straight. Janes was followed home by MAN pilot Jamie Anderson (GBR), Citignola, and René Reinert (MAN).
Janes won the Chrome-category race for the Grammer Truck Cup, Anderson and Citignola coming in runners-up.
Buggyra Racing 1969 (Janes / Lacko) was the top-scoring team, followed by Löwen Power (Albacete / Lenz) and „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Steffi Halm).
