Friday in Most

30. August 2019Most - Most of the teams arriving at Autodrom Most on Wednesday were greeted with radiant sunshine. At noon yesterday the sky grew as dark as doom and it presently began to bucket down. Those who’d set their tents up the day before considered themselves lucky; the others scrambled at every let-up to erect a watertight shelter against the downpour. Today, the first day of action at Round 5 of this year’s FIA European Truck Racing Championship, it was bright sun and blue skies all over again. A bit muggy really, with the temperature at around 30°C. As a consequence a sense of lethargy seemed to prevail, at least the whole morning. But at 1 pm, when it was finally time for FP1, the paddock – and the track – suddenly burst into life.
Home hero Adam Lacko drove the fastest lap, a 2:02.649, in his Buggyra Freightliner – bettering Iveco pilot Jochen Hahn’s FP1 time from last year. The German came in second-quickest. Two hours later Hahn set the top time of the day, 2:02.062, barely edging Lacko. But this time, unlike the earlier session in which the Czech was the only one to go below 2:03, five pilots cracked the barrier. Hahn and Lacko were joined by the Löwen Power MAN duo of Antonio Albacete (ESP) and Sascha Lenz (GER), and Iveco pilot André Kursim.
In the early evening was the City Parade, the excursion by the trucks and their drivers into the town square. Public interest in these massive racing machines was as intense as ever – the crowds milling around the trucks were exceeded only by the throng at the long table at which the racers obligingly autographed every handy item of merchandise the eager fans held out to them.
