Sunday at the Hungaroring Part 3 - Kursim comes good in Race 4

23. June 2019Hungaroring - The overcast sky and oppressive humidity suggested rain, but not a drop fell till the end of it all.
Before the last race of the weekend could get going, however, there was no small stir at the rear of the grid. During the grid walk, with hundreds of fans milling about, Terry Gibbon’s team discovered a crack in one of the brake discs on his MAN. This was replaced posthaste on the grid itself, and the race could start on the dot. Not that this timely intervention did the Brit any good; on Lap 7 he pitted with a ruptured fluid line – and retired.
Title aspirant Adam Lacko was harder hit. The Buggyra pilot couldn’t complete the first lap, but crawled back towards pit lane with indeterminate defects on his Freightliner. With 25,000 spectators watching, this certainly hasn’t been a good weekend for the 2017 champ.
Starting from pole, Anderson did surprisingly well, taking the lead into the first corner and keeping it for three quarters of the lap, despite being hounded by Kursim and the rest of the pack. The yellow Iveco was the first to get past after a contact, and then, a lap later, the blue Iveco of Reinert as well. From there on, the two Germans steadily pulled away from the field, Anderson acting as a buffer between them and the rest. The Brit withstood the pressure for more than half the race, but was then overtaken in rapid succession by Albacete, Hahn, and Halm. Not long after, Kiss and Lenz too made their way past. The German MAN pilot had started 16th as a consequence of his failure to finish the previous race, but made up eight places on the first lap itself. Then he happened upon Kiss, in whom he finally met his match.
At this point not only was the podium decided – Kursim, Reinert, and Albacete – but also the rest of the top order with Hahn, Halm, Kiss, and Lenz. These wonderful men (and woman) and their racing machines are so closely matched that gaps of more than a couple of truck lengths between them are next to impossible to close over a race distance.
Anderson had his hands full salvaging P8 from the relentless designs of José Rodrigues and Janes.
The Brit’s position also brought him the Grammer Truck Cup win, ahead of Janes and Recuenco.
„Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Steffi Halm) was the top-scoring team for the second time today, followed by Löwen Power (Albacete / Lenz) and tankpool24 Racing (Kiss / Citignola).
Hahn now leads the driver standings with 94 points, followed by Albacete (71), Kiss (63), Halm (61), Reinert (57), Lacko (53), Lenz (42), and Kursim (36).
