Saturday in Jarama Part 3 - Vršecký wins his first race this season

07. October 2017Jarama - The trucks start the second race of the day according to the order in which they finish the first, with places one through eight reversed. That meant José Rodrigues was on pole, Lenz directly alongside him. But you’d be mistaken to think this would turn out to be a race between these two – who have shown, on several occasions this season, that they are capable of deciding outcomes. In the Fangio hairpin at the end of the main straight the field was thoroughly reshuffled. Rodrigues was evidently too late on the brakes and skidded off with locked wheels towards the gravel, collecting Lenz with him.
This was an unexpected opening some of their pursuers could exploit for significant advantage even as others were blocked by the tohubohu, even if they weren’t involved directly.
Vršecký pleasantly found himself at the head of the field, with Körber and Albacete on his tail. Not long after, and before he knew it, the German Iveco pilot had lost his place to the Spaniard – to the wild delight of the partisan crowd. Albacete now bore down on Vršecký, and though there were moments the twice-champ looked vulnerable, it only appeared so. The Spaniard had to experience what so many others already have this season – that it’s almost impossible to force Vršecký into an error and overtake, even if you’re clearly faster. The Czech made none, and held out for his first win this season. A small gap had, meanwhile, opened between the leading duo and the rest because, like Vršecký, Körber was defending his position for all he was worth. The experience of 30 years in the sport came in good use, and the German thrice-champ was home and dry in 3rd.
It was a power podium after the race – Vršecký, Albacete, and Körber bringing the weight of eight titles combined to the celebration. Hahn, a four-times champion himself, had to satisfy himself with 4th, followed by twice-champ Kiss and the newly crowned Adam Lacko.
Lenz had, following his forced excursion into the gravel, recovered a few spots and, as 7th at the finish, was the first of the drivers who don’t have a title to their names.
The last three places in the points were taken by Steffi Halm, Kursim, and José Rodrigues.
The title was already securely Lacko’s after Race 1; he now has 365 points. With a maximum of only 30 points still there for the taking, Hahn (319) is as good as runner-up with a lead of 29 points over Kiss. But the Hungarian’s third place remains under threat from Steffi Halm, who at 281 is only nine points behind. Albacete (242) is safe in 5th and Lenz (172) in 6th. But Körber is only a point behind Vršecký (142) and something could likely change between the two.
Buggyra Racing 1969 (Vršecký / Lacko) took the team honours for the second race in a row. „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Körber) was second this time, ahead of Truck Sport Bernau + Reboconort (José Rodrigues / Albacete).
Kursim took the Promoter’s Cup victory, ahead of José Rodrigues and MAN pilot Frankie Vojtíšek (CZE).
