Sunday in Le Mans Part 3 – Gerd Körber wins last race

24. September 2017Le Mans - The result of the earlier race was only certified while the trucks were already slotting into formation for the final race of the 8th round of the FIA European Truck Championship, but there was no change in the provisional classification.
Kursim was on pole, with Körber alongside, and the crowd of nearly 56,000 was set.
The Iveco pilot fully capitalised on his first-row advantage, whereas Kursim just couldn’t come off well enough, dropping to 8th before the end of the first lap. Körber gradually increased his lead, with Steffi Halm in tow. Lenz was up to 3rd in the initial stages, but had to let Hahn and then even Lacko past in short order. But Lenz wasn’t about to let Lacko get away; he soon pulled back and the two ran side by side for a long while till the German had his nose ahead at last. However, by this time the trio of Körber, Halm, and Hahn were so far ahead that their podium places were no longer under threat. Lenz did bring his truck safely home in 4th, but the novel fourfold German triumph that should have been, failed to materialise after the MAN pilot was given a 30 second elapsed time penalty for overspeeding. For Lenz, the distinction of having driven the fastest lap for the third race this weekend was but cold comfort.
Lacko thus inherited 4th place, ahead of Kiss and Vršecký.
This time too the outcome was close. The first seven – counting Lenz – crossed the line over the space of a little over six seconds. Seventh place in the classification was snapped up by Kursim, ahead of Jenkins, Albacete, and Brereton. But since Jenkins isn’t eligible for points in the FIA ranking, Albacete and Brereton were promoted by one position each, the final point going to Lenz.
„Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Körber) was a worthy team victor, ahead of Buggyra Racing 1969 (Vršecký / Lacko) and Reinert Adventure (Steffi Halm / Lenz).
Kursim won first prize in the Promoter’s Cup for the second time today, with Jenkins and Brereton first and second runner-up.
Lacko leads the field into the final round in Jarama in a fortnight with a 45-points advantage over Hahn (300), who is trailed by Kiss (284), Halm (270), Albacete (213), Lenz (164), and Körber (127).
