Sunday at the Hungaroring Part 3 - Lacko takes his third win on the trot

27. August 2017Hungaroring - The little clouds had cleared and the sun resumed its merciless blaze from a blue sky. Even though it was now late afternoon, the official thermometer read in excess of 35°C, and the asphalt was ashimmer once again at 56°. The only zero reading was the one (in km/h) on the anemometer.
The 32,000 sweltering spectators were in for some overheated action on the track as well. There was shoving and slamming and blocking – hardly a truck that wasn’t involved, either as perpetrator or victim.
Polesitter Körber beat Lenz into the first corner, the rest of the field following nose to tail. The second curve gave us what’s probably the most spectacular scene, with several trucks colliding and then scattering off the track. The two drivers who came off worst were Lenz, who after a good start dropped way down the field, and Albacete, who hurtled into the tyre barrier and was only able to resume his race in the battered truck after everyone had disappeared into the distance. The biggest gainers from the fiasco were the Buggyras of Lacko and Vršecký, who shot up to the very front from 8th and 9th.
Körber was still in the lead, but he soon had Lacko sitting right on his tail, and the Czech wasted no time attacking. He’d soon made it past the German into the lead, which he then proceeded to build out unimpeded to bag his third successive win this weekend.
Körber was now set on by a pack led by Steffi Halm. A third into the race the MAN pilotess pushed ahead of the Iveco and, from then on, faced no further obstacle or challenge till flagfall. On the other hand, Körber and Vršecký were now locked in bitter combat. The two trucks soon came together, with serious consequences for the German’s. Körber steadily slowed, allowing several competitors through without a shred of resistance, and then – two laps before the finish – drove resignedly back into pit lane.
At mid-race Kiss’s Mercedes rolled off at the first corner with a mechanical failure and came to a halt trackside, thinning the list of podium aspirants out further.
While Lacko and Halm were pretty much guaranteed their positions, an intense battle for 3rd unfolded behind them. Hahn, who had Smith snorting down his neck, made numerous attempts to overtake the Buggyra of Vršecký. His manoeuvres slowed the trio’s tempo sufficiently to allow Lenz – who’d fallen back quite a distance – to catch up. But Vršecký managed to hang onto 3rd place at the finish ahead of Hahn, Smith, Lenz, and Brereton. Kursim, Albacete, and Kleinnagelvoort took the last three places in the points.
For the third time this weekend it was Buggyra Racing 1969 (Vršecký / Lacko) atop the winners’ podium, followed by Reinert Adventure (Halm / Lenz) and „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Körber).
Brereton won the Promoter’s Cup prize ahead of Kursim and Kleinnagelvoort.
Lacko has stretched his overall lead further and now has 232 points. Hahn has drawn level with Kiss at 174, followed by Halm (172), Albacete (126), Lenz (92), and Körber (88).
