Saturday at the Hungaroring Part 2 – Home hero’s race is a victory march from start to flag

26. August 2017Hungaroring - The sun beat down mercilessly from a cloudless sky, the temperature had climbed to well above 30°C, and the grid was ashimmer with the asphalt measured at 57°+ as the trucks took off on the formation lap for Race 1.
This unfolded as a further display of total dominance by Norbert Kiss at his home circuit. After the Mercedes pilot decided the drag to the first corner in his own favour, there was no holding him back. He simply went on increasing his lead over Hahn, who in turn managed to pull out as much of a gap on Steffi Halm in third place. The podium was thus determined on Lap 1 itself. The pack of trucks that followed at some remove were more busied with their own internal battle to mount any sort of challenge on the trio ahead. The bitter fight for 4th place lasted till the finish, Shane Brereton handily holding off the (nominally) more powerful trucks of Lacko and Albacete all the way to the flag.
Lenz followed relatively unmolested in 7th place – till the final lap, when Smith suddenly came up on him. For two-thirds of the race the Englishman, who’d been so disappointingly dumped out of the Super Pole, was held up in a sextet led by José Rodrigues, all in pursuit of the coveted 8th place and pole position for the day’s second race. This group included Körber, Vršecký, the second tankpool24 Mercedes with André Kursim (GER), and the Czech Frankie Vojtíšek (MAN). Three laps to flagfall Smith finally moved ahead of José Rodrigues. The Portuguese thereafter had to give way to Körber, Vršecký, Kursim, and Vojtíšek, leaving him way down in 13th at the finish.
The race officials were still to have their say. A number of drivers were penalised for overspeed infringements, tossing the classification up. While Kiss, Hahn, and Halm could continue to enjoy their podium finishes, there were major changes in the finishing order behind. Lacko was now 4th, followed by Lenz, Smith, Körber, and Vršecký, who thus inadvertently inherited pole for the day’s second race.
The two final places in the points went to Kursim und Brereton, who dropped from 4th to 10th as a consequence of his 10 second penalty. Albacete was now 11th, out of the points altogether.
Kursim took the Promoter’s Cup win, ahead of Brereton and Vojtíšek.
Tankpool24 Racing (Kiss / Kursim) was the team winner, ahead of „Die Bullen von Iveco-Magirus“ (Hahn / Körber) and Reinert Adventure (Halm / Lenz).
