Sunday at the Nürburgring Part 3 - Last race cancelled

02. July 2017Nürburgring - This is probably the shortest closing report on any round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship that we’ve written to date. To the disappointment of the pilots, the teams, and above all the 115,000 fans the fourth and final ETRC race was cancelled.
For truck racing’s old troopers the decision evoked unhappy memories of the Truck Grand Prix of 15 years ago, when fog on the Sunday made any racing impossible.
Even though the weather this time has been rather awful throughout, at least it isn’t to blame for the premature stoppage of the TGP, the 3rd round of this year’s FIA European Truck Racing Championship. A broken injector in the engine of one of the race trucks had sprayed diesel at high pressure onto the track during the formation lap of the fourth and final Mittelrhein Cup race. At first it was believed the streaks of oil could be mopped up relatively quickly. But an hour later, as the trucks for the MRC still stood on the grid awaiting their start, it was decided to cancel the race, even as an army of around 150 marshals, firemen, and municipal cleaners continued their mammoth effort to get the track back into acceptable condition for the FIA race.
At some point, however, race control realised that this wasn’t going to happen as quickly as they – and everyone else – fervently hoped, and the 32nd TGP was declared concluded.
