Antonio Albacete returns to the European championship with Truck Sport Bernau

20. March 2017One of the most successful partnerships in the history of trucksport has been revived. The day after Antonio Albacete demonstrated at the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship on the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida that, despite his one-year absence from racing, he’s lost none of the innate ability that took him to three European world championships, Lutz Bernau issued a statement to the effect that the Spaniard will drive for his team once again this coming season.
Albacete and the MAN outfit from Bavaria have celebrated numerous triumphs together, including those three driver’s championships and two team titles. Two years ago the Madrilène set up his own team, but when primary sponsor Cepsa, the Spanish petroleum company, abruptly ended its motorsports engagements he was forced to give up racing, even if temporarily. He sold his team and devoted his energies to other professional pursuits, most notably the restoration of old-timers. But the Spaniard never broke off contact with the Truck Racing community – so it was only natural that he didn’t hesitate for a second when the TRO tapped him for the race in India.
Now Albacete is officially returning to the FIA ETRC – to the delight of his large fan following on the Iberian peninsula and abroad, – and he’ll drive as a team together with compadre José Rodrigues.
The new partnership with the Portuguese brings the relationship between the two racers full circle – it was the Rodrigues family to whom Albacete sold his truck and equipment at the end of the 2015 season.
