Saturday in Jarama Part 2 – Lacko wins and narrows the gap

01. October 2016Jarama - The mercury had crept up to 30°, but the action on the track was nowhere as hot as a late Spanish summer. Polesitter Lacko took the lead with Hahn in tow, and there were squeals of delight from the fans every time Hahn attempted to overtake. But the MAN pilot conspicuously refrained from any semblance of hara-kiri, allowing Lacko the luxury of being able to keep an eye on the goings-on behind in his rear-view mirrors. It was soon evident that Hahn presented no real danger despite the occasional attack, and at the end the duo crossed the finish line with the same gap that separated them at the end of the first lap.
Reinert drove a relatively relaxed race to 3rd. Like Lacko, he was only concentrated on the action behind him. Tangling with the frontrunners wasn’t on his mind – all he wanted was to keep Kiss at a safe distance, and that he did superbly.
The fight for 5th place was where all the action was. Steffi Halm had let Janiec and Lenz pass her at the start. A short while later she put Lenz behind her again into 7th, but Janiec was a tough nut to crack, to the chagrin of a group of Spanish fans, who – in honour of her and Ellen Lohr – had fastened a large placard with their race numbers and the letters “WOW!” (Women On Wheels) on the fencing.
The fans will have been sadder again towards the end, because in the penultimate lap Lenz recaptured 6th place, forcing Steffi to make do with 7th ahead of her WOW! Teammate Lohr, who gets pole for the day’s second race.
Forman and Dutch Scania pilot Erwin Kleinnagelvoort were 9th and 10th.
Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert) was the top team, ahead of Buggyra International (Lacko / Forman) and Lion Racing-Lenz (Janiec / Lenz).
The races in Jarama also count towards the Spanish championship, and the entry list for that category includes two Germans, Sascha Lenz and Ellen Lohr, which means they finished first and second in that classification.
