Sunday in Le Mans Part 3 – Reinert too makes it a double

11. October 2015Le Mans - At the start of this final race of the season, Reinert was quicker than polesitter Janiec to the first corner and had his nose ahead in the chicane. Janiec was immediately set upon by the entire mass of pursuers, and in the ensuing crush everybody, including Hahn, lost momentum. Right there, it would appear, the battle for runner-up had effectively ended. The German MAN pilot had to finish on the podium – ideally on the top step – if he was to have any chance at all of finishing second in the championship. But that prospect, it seemed, had now vanished. Only a little later there was a heavy crash between Hahn and Kiss. While the Hungarian subsequently slunk into the pits, Hahn now clung to his adversary Lacko’s rear bumper for dear life, the two proceeding to gain on Lohr, then in 5th.
At the front Reinert had managed to shake off his immediate pursuers, but the battle between Janiec, Körber, and Vršecký was fought, as it were, on a razor’s-edge. That naturally cost the trio vital seconds and played perfectly into Reinert’s hands. The MAN pilot sailed to his second victory in Le Mans in front of 55,000 spectators, far more dominantly than his 5-second advantage at the finish might suggest.
After several attacks by Körber on Janiec, during which Vršecký latterly played wait-and-watch, the German finally forced his way ahead of the French MAN pilot to secure second place. Janiec stayed 3rd, and was followed home by Vršecký in 4th.
Lohr meanwhile had been overcome by both Lacko and Hahn, who to all appearances were driving like conjoined twins.
The revived battle for second-place, which we earlier thought had been decided already – was hotting up. The right-hand rear outer tyre on Lacko’s Freightliner started to bleed, and if the tyre did go flat, forcing Lacko to drop out, Hahn would collect eight points for 5th place, Lacko would have none, and the German would be runner-up.
But Lacko’s tyre held up and Hahn finished behind the Czech in 6th, ahead of Albacete, who by then had also overtaken Lohr.
Halm and Vojtíšek were the last two to finish in the points.
Like yesterday’s second race, the winning team this time too was Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert), ahead of (Vršecký / Lacko) and Oxxo-Lion (Kiss / Janiec).
But that wasn’t the end of it all. Race control continued to scrutinise several incidents during the race for a couple of hours and almost all the drivers were called to account, before the final results were announced a good 2,5 hours after the finish.
Hahn was given a 30 second penalty, which dropped the bantam from Altensteig to 11th. Albacete, Lohr, Halm, and Vojtíšek all moved one place up, and Lenz collected the final point for 10th place.
Behind Kiss, who finished the season with 599 points, Lacko (447) is runner-up followed by Hahn (434), Vršecký (405), Albacete (385), and Reinert (278).
