Saturday in Jarama Part 2 – Norbert Kiss wins first race, his second championship

03. October 2015Jarama - There was no rain, and the sky cleared somewhat. In the Oxxo team’s quarters it wasn’t just brighter; all was sweetness and light - Norbert Kiss had defended his title with a pole-to-flag victory. After 33 of 40 races in the 2015 FIA ETRC the Hungarian is champion for the second time in a row.
At the start itself polesitter Kiss made it clear that he was going to be doing nobody any favours. He took to his heels the moment the lights went green, not wanting to tangle with any of his competitors. Over a few laps he pulled out a gap on thrice-champion Albacete, with Hahn, another thrice-champ, trailing some distance behind in third. The podium was thus settled early on.
The cheers went up as the Spanish fans willed their Antonio to narrow the gap and close in on the leader. The cheering reached its crescendo in the Le Mans-Farina sequence of curves, where all the die-hard fans congregate, happily swallowing all the dust their heroes swirl up as they powerslide into the gravel.
Albacete had gotten so close that he was now clung to Kiss’s rear bumper.
But catching up and overtaking are two different things, and neither of the two wanted to land in the gravel and drop out. And so they crossed the finish line – in fair combat – a few tenths of a second apart.
The win gives Kiss an insurmountable lead in the standings and his second title in a row.
Hahn came in third, further cementing his position in the battle for runner-up.
Reinert was fourth, ahead of Steffi Halm in the second Reinert Racing truck.
Sixth place went to Janiec, ahead of Lacko and Vršecký.
With his eighth place Vršecký collected pole for the day’s second race. But the Czech didn’t get it without a protracted fight. At the start he’d fallen back five or six places, then managed to make up a few before he was held up by Lenz. The young German had climbed to seventh for a short while, but was now busied trying to hold onto 8th place. A few laps before the finish he was able to withstand the pressure from Vršecký no longer and had to content himself with 9th behind the Buggyra pilot.
The most bitterly contested position was 10th, and with it the last point on offer. For a long time it looked like Vojtíšek would have it. Ellen Lohr was right on his tail, but she had no apparent chance of overtaking. The past master finally did let the grande dame get ahead — but not out of any politeness.
Oxxo-Lion (Kiss / Janiec) was the top team ahead of Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert) and Bernau-Albacete (Lohr / Albacete).
