Sunday in Jarama Part 2 – Kiss takes command

05. October 2014Jarama - The starting formation for Sunday’s first race threw up a few surprises, the most unpleasant one involving Steffi Halm, the young German who’s not yet been able to drive one full race lap so far this weekend. Her Lion MAN has had a problem with a leaking steering gear, and the crew has replaced everything it possibly could, to no avail. And so her starting position for the third race went vacant.
Czech Frankie Vojtíšek (MAN) had to start from the rear of the field after all his qualifying times were cancelled because of overspeeding.
Bösiger’s 15th-place start was no real surprise, but merely a consequence of his tangling with Vršecký yesterday. The Swiss’s penalty was a handicap of 10 places on the grid.
Kiss’s pole-to-flag victory wasn’t surprising either. He’d gained the upper hand at the start, and led Hahn cleanly till the finish. What did surprise us, though, was how quickly the Hungarian was able to stretch his lead. By contrast, the rest of the podium places were contested very closely. Albacete kept up a volley of assaults on Hahn, but the German parried them all with élan. Vršecký, lurking in the shadows all along, came away empty-handed. Three laps from the finish, it looked like all the points places had been decided.
Reinert and Lacko in 5th and 6th drove a rather serene race, followed at some remove by Janiec in seventh. Bösiger had driven his way up to 8th; in the last lap he was actually able to overtake Janiec and move one place up. So the pole for the final race fell to the Frenchman.
Major and José Rodrigues were running ninth and 10th, when things started to unravel rather rapidly for them. First Major came to a standstill in the second of the two sharp hairpins, and only a few hundred metres ahead Rodrigues slammed into the Armco and then into a tyre barrier. And so, Portuguese José Teodosio (Renault) and the German Ellen Lohr (MAN) were handed the last FIA points completely unexpectedly.
Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert) was the top team, followed by OXXO (Kiss / Major) and Truck Sport Bernau (Albacete / Bösiger).
