Sunday in Nogaro Part 1 - Hahn on pole

22. June 2014Nogaro - An overcast morning — quite the opposite of what had been announced for this, the third round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship at the Circuit Paul Armagnac in Nogaro in southwestern France. Nevertheless, the temperatures were already at around 22° during the early morning warm-up. It was Kiss once again who drove the quickest lap, but a few others too managed to make it in under 1:54s, among them the two Czech Buggyra Freightliner pilots Adam Lacko and David Vršecký. Overall, though, it looked like all were holding something in reserve.
In second qualifying, with their trucks freshly reshod, it was time for everybody to get more assertive. But top drivers were back to the refuge of the pit lane after just one lap out, certain that they’d gone fast enough to be in the top 10 for the SuperPole. Again, conserving their tyres was paramount. Spaniard Antonio Albacete (MAN) was quickest in 1:53.349s, followed by Kiss, Vršecký, Lacko, and Jochen Hahn (GER), Markus Bösiger (SUI), birthday boy Benedek Major (HUN) – he turns 18 today – and René Reinert (GER), all MAN. German Steffi Halm (MAN) and Portuguese José Rodrigues stayed out on the track a bit longer, but they needn’t have worried — nobody was able to deny them their SuperPole slots.
In the shootout Hahn drove a blistering 1:52.988s in his very first lap. Most everybody expected this time to be bettered in the course of the 10-minute session, but it stood till the end — every one of the top 10, right down till Major, Halm, and Rodrigues, recorded their fastest time in their first flying lap. Albacete secured a front-row start for himself alongside Hahn, followed by Kiss, Lacko, Vršecký, Bösiger, Major, Reinert, Halm, and Rodrigues.
