Friday in Misano

23. May 2014Misano - There was no sign Friday of the glorious summer weather of the day before. A thick blanket of cloud hung low over the Italian Adria with the sun managing to peep through on only a few occasions. The mercury, though, climbed back above 25°C. The paddock at the Misano World Circuit was again a picture of serenity. Some of the teams in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship premièred new-look trucks and all-new marquees, some of which they took their own sweet time setting up — but then there was more than enough time. Take it easy was the name of the game.
The only item on the agenda was the scrutineering, and here there was a novelty in addition to the obligatory weighing and measuring. For the first time in the championship’s history, FIA technical delegate Carlos Barros inspected the trucks from underneath by hoisting them up on a mobile hydraulic lift. That, perhaps, was the most exciting event of the whole day.
Nevertheless there was a palpable tension in the air. After all, nobody really knows where he or she stands, or how quick the competition is. Only after the first free practice on Saturday morning will one be any the wiser, but it’s really only in the timed practice and the Superpole thereafter that you can expect each driver to really play his or her hand.
