Saturday in Le Mans Part 2 - Hahn wins and catches up

12. October 2013Le Mans - This is going down to the wire, but the championship will not be decided today. After the first race, Albacete’s advantage has shrunk to only three points. Hahn collected 20 points for his win, Kiss took 15 for his second place, and third-placed Albacete 12. Had the first timesheet from the SuperPole with Hahn in eighth place not been corrected, the defending champ’s prospects would have looked far bleaker. But the bantam from the Black Forest town of Altensteig seized the lead from polesitter Kiss in the second lap and didn’t give it up till the finish. Kiss tailed the German throughout, but it never looked like he was going to threaten Hahn’s escape to victory. Oestreich followed in third, but he in turn didn’t look like he was going to be able to keep up. In the fourth lap, when he was finally overtaken by teammate Albacete, the leading duo was some 10 seconds ahead. But even the Spaniard wasn’t able to reel the leaders in, and could only finish a distant 20 seconds behind. Bösiger, Lacko, and Vršecký made up the next group, and nobody really expected this order to change. But on the last lap Lacko pulled past Bösiger, who then let Vršecký through a little later. And so the first seven places were decided. There was a spirited battle for eighth, which meant pole position for the day’s second race. For a long time it looked like Janiec and Reinert would decide that spot between themselves, but somewhere towards the middle of the race the Finn Mika Mäkinen (MAN), who had been lurking in the shadows, finally mounted a determined assault. He first got the better of MAN colleague Reinert, then, two laps later, broke Renault pilot Janiec’s resistance to secure pole position for the second race. Janiec and Reinert thus had to be content with ninth and 10th.
Konrad Hahn as team boss of Castrol Team Hahn Racing (Hahn / Mäkinen) collected the team trophy. Truck Sport Lutz Bernau (Albacete / Oestreich) and OXXO Energy Truck Race Team (Kiss / Major) were second and third in the team ranking.
