Saturday in Jarama Part 3 - Oestreich wins second race, Truck Sport Lutz Bernau Team Champion 2013

05. October 2013Jarama - Albacete’s second race ended as catastrophically as his first went off splendidly. A few clouds had made an appearance and the air was comfortably warm at around 25°C, but it would soon hot up rather uncomfortably. As a result of his eighth-place finish earlier, Janiec was now in pole, with Mariezcurrena alongside. Immediately after the lights turned green, in the sweeping, nearly 180° bend right after the pit straight, the two leaders clashed. The Spaniard’s blue MAN spun into the gravel and back onto the track, right in the path of the red Cepsa MAN, which ran into it at full clip. A huge cloud of dust arose, in which more trucks crashed into one another. It was only when the dust settled that the full magnitude of the pile-up became clear. Albacete’s red MAN was a wreck. The Renault of the Belgian Jean-Pierre Blaise could no longer be driven and had to be towed away, like the Cepsa MAN. The MAN trucks of Steffi Halm (GER), Mariezcurrena, and Vojtíšek, and the Freightliner of Ellen Lohr (GER), which had all been caught out, crawled around the track back towards the pit straight, where the field regrouped after the mandatory interruption. They all ducked into the pits for repairs, but in the event only the two ladies could make it to the restart. In any case, under the rules they were relegated to the rear of the field, where they found themselves in the company of Reinert and Vršecký, both of whom had failed to finish the previous race and therefore had to start the second race from the rear.
An hour later, with the track finally cleared, it was time for the restart. For three laps Janiec was able to defend his pole position against a hard-charging Kiss. In one assault the Hungarian drifted a bit from the ideal line, and Oestreich, who was then in fourth, wasted no time capitalising on the momentary confusion ahead of him to sweep past Hahn, Kiss, and Janiec at one go. Once in the lead, the man from Fulda held on till the finish. Two laps later first Kiss, and then Hahn, overtook Janiec, and thus the podium places were decided. The Frenchman had to make do with a thankless fourth.
Meanwhile Vršecký had ploughed through the entire field and was in fifth place at the finish. The two MKR colleagues Lacko and Bösiger followed him home, once again in brotherly agreement. Mäkinen, Major, and Frenchman Jeremy Robineau (MAN) took the remaining places in the points. The two ladies in the field, Halm and Lohr, treated the crowd to a spirited duel, but could only finish in 11th and 12th, the best of the rest.
The new tankpool24 pilot André Kursim, the cynosure of the crowds all along, had not only gotten his Mercedes quite handily under control but also seemed to be quite at home in the rough-and-tumble of truck racing. With an 18th-place finish in the first race, a 16th in the second, and ever shorter lap times, the youngster is coming along quite well indeed.
Despite dropping out, Albacete has been able to maintain his lead in the overall standings. With 360 points he is now 18 ahead of Hahn (342), who is followed by Oestreich (296), Kiss (249), and Vršecký (247).
