Sunday in Most – Part 3, Home victory for Vršecký

01. September 2013Most - In the last race at Most, polesitter Vojtíšek took the lead in the tear to the first corner far more fluently than you might have expected. The Czech MAN pilot was then able to pull ahead of his pursuers, who followed in his train, nose to tail. But when they caught up soon enough, the old hand parried every attack. Kiss meanwhile had overtaken Vršecký briefly before ceding his position to the Buggyra pilot once again. Vojtíšek was still out ahead in the lead, and the first half of the race was already over. But then a number of events in rapid succession turned things around. Vršecký renewed his assault on his compatriot, which resulted in both of them drifting wide and losing speed. Kiss was quick to capitalise and take over the lead, but he couldn’t hold on to it — the steering problem that had plagued him throughout the weekend resurfaced, and whereas every observer fully expected Kiss now to win, he instead had to abandon his disabled MAN in the gravel trap into which it had slidden. Nothing – and nobody– now stood between Vršecký and victory. Lacko meanwhile had overtaken Vojtíšek, but the spectators (there was 90,000 of them over three days) were denied the Czech one-two-three finish they all would have loved to see. Albacete (who thus snatched third place) and then Oestreich and Hahn, were all able to overtake Vojtíšek in the closing laps. Bösiger finished seventh, followed by Major, Körber, and Reinert.
Of the two German race-amazons Ellen Lohr and Stephanie Halm (MAN), only Steffi actually raced — but even she couldn’t add any points to the three she took yesterday; with one 13th and one 12th-place finish she missed out only marginally.
Truck Sport Lutz Bernau (Albacete / Oestreich) once again topped the team ranking. MKR Technology (Lacko / Bösiger) took second place ahead of Castrol Team Hahn Racing (Hahn / Mäkinen).
Albacete’s lead in the drivers’ standings shrank further today to seven points. The Spaniard now has 298 versus 291 for Hahn, who is followed by Oestreich (233), Vršecký (209), Kiss (187), Lacko (160), and Bösiger (133).
