Sunday in Most – Part 2, Hahn wins first race

01. September 2013Most - The sky was clouded over but it remained dry, the temperature hovering a little over 15°C. The end of Sunday’s first race was brightened with the radiance of Jochen Hahn’s joy at another victory (rather than the shining of the sun). The polesitter from the Black Forest town of Altensteig took the lead right from the start. At the exit of the first curve his direct pursuers, Kiss and Albacete, collided heavily, allowing Hahn to pull ahead a bit. While Albacete fell back to sixth, Kiss was able to hold onto second place, followed by Oestreich, Lacko, Vršecký, and Albacete. The field was in disarray all over, the result of more shunts further down. German race-by-race pilot Gerd Körber was relegated to the rear, far behind the rest of the field. In his race to catch up he was again hit by the young Pole Gregory Ostaszewski (MAN), forcing the Iveco to retire onto the grassy verge a few hundred metres ahead with steering damage. The yellow flags were out from then on, forbidding overtaking on an entire stretch of track along which the drivers are most wont to overtake. And so the top drivers had for the most part to rein in their attacking instincts. Albacete alone evidently wasn’t content with his position (sixth) and, at the very spot where the restriction on overtaking was eventually lifted, in the apex of the 180° bend at Observation Post 5, the Spaniard outbraked Vršecký on the inside. Somewhat later the Cepsa pilot got the better of Lacko as well and now lay in fourth place, thus managing to hold his points deficit to Hahn in limits. But the race leader, followed by Oestreich and Kiss, were by now so far ahead that Albacete had no chance of further improving his position. Lacko was fifth behind Albacete, followed by Bösiger, Vršecký, and Frankie Vojtíšek (MAN). With his eighth-place finish the Czech had thus secured pole position for the final race of the weekend.
The list of points-finishers was completed by Mäkinen and the Renault pilot Anthony Janiec (FRA). At the prizegiving ceremony it was reported that the race commission would once again scrutinise the start of the race, in particular what (if anything) took place between Hahn and Kiss. In the event the Hungarian was penalised with 10 seconds added onto his elapsed time, demoting him to fourth behind Oestreich and Albacete.
The podium positions in the team championship went to Castrol Team Hahn Racing (Hahn / Mäkinen) ahead of Truck Sport Lutz Bernau (Albacete / Oestreich) and OXXO Energy Truck Race Team (Kiss / Major).
