Sunday in Misano – Part 1

19. May 2013Misano - As morning dawned it looked like we`d have a lovely summer day. The three MAN drivers Norbert Kiss (HUN), Antonio Albacete (ESP), and Jochen Hahn (GER) were fastest in the warm-up, though times in this session are no indicator of how fast an individual driver can - and will - go.
But the sky soon started filling with dark clouds, and a few drops fell at the start of the second timed practice. Whether it was due to this factor, or just the fact that the top drivers weren`t revealing their cards, René Reinert (GER) in his blue MAN found himself at the top of the timesheet by a rather large margin after the first lap. When it became clear that the dreaded downpour would not materialise, the times started tumbling and the top 10 spots for the SuperPole started filling up with, well, the usual suspects.
Five minutes before the end of the 15-minute session Hahn was still at 17th place; Kiss und Bösiger were two more potential candidates for the podium that hadn`t yet made it. But then all three stepped up the pace, Hahn and Kiss trading fastest laps and Bösiger pulling out a fifth-fastest time. The two Czechs David Vrsecky (Buggyra Freightliner) und Adam Lacko (Renault), Antonio Albacete, his German teammate Markus Oestreich and the Finn Mika Mäkinen (both MAN), Reinert, und the Belgian Jean-Pierre Blaise (Renault) rounded out the top 10.
The black clouds had disappeared again, and the sun was back in blazing form. And the action on the track was hotting up too - the drivers were all setting significantly faster times in the SuperPole, Hahn by more than four-tenths. That, unfortunately for him, wasn`t good enough. With one searing lap of 2:02.826 Kiss vaulted ahead of the reigning champ, snatching pole by a whopping six-tenths-plus! Oestreich, Albacete, and Vrsecky all finished faster than Hahn, who had to make do with fifth on the grid, with Lacko, Bösiger, Reinert, Mäkinen, und Blaise occupying the rest of the slots.
