Saturday in Le Mans – part 2 – Jochen Hahn Champion of 2012

13. October 2012Le Mans - When the first race started it had finally stopped raining. The polesetter Albacete took on the lead right from the start, but Hahn was close behind him. However, Hahn did not want to take any risk, because the second place would also have been enough for the German driver. After only a few laps, Albacete and Hahn pulled clear of the rest of the group, including Vrsecky, Janiec, Bösiger and Kiss. At the start some drivers in the center field had already bumped into each other. The Czech Frankie Vojtisek (MAN) only slowly followed the group afterwards and turned into the pit lane right after.
The two drivers at the very front apparently decided not to hurt each other, but then the red MAN from Albacete started to falter. Without any problems the green-white MAN from Hahn passed Albacete and therefore the title holder seemed to be a step closer to winning the Championship. A few laps later Albacete was even forced to let Vrsecky pass him and during the last lap the Spaniard had to quit due to a failure of the steering of his truck. At this point it was clear who was going to win. Hahn was the old and the new Champion. Vrsecky and Janiec joined the German on the podium. Bösiger placed 4th ahead of Mäkinen, Oestreich, Lacheze and Kiss. The Hungarian placed 8th and also won the pole for the second race of the day. The last points were won by the Spaniard Javier Mariezcurrena (MAN) and the Belgian Jean-Pierre Blaise (Renault). Körber had bad luck, because due to technical problems he lost his place in the top ten and had to be satisfied with the 11th rank. Later on, Blaise received a 10-seconds-penalty, which caused Körber and the Belgian to switch places. The only woman in the group, Ellen Lohr, also experienced technical problems on her Mercedes. She had had problems with a broken front axle, however, she placed 15th in the end.
Even though everything had been decided, the second race was not boring. Kiss defended his pole position successfully against Lacheze and when he won, the OXXO-Team cheered him on from the side line. Lacheze was set back a little bit and clashed with Bösiger which resulted in the fact that the Swiss had to quit and the Frenchman fell back to place number 19. Therefore another Frenchman made it on the podium. Janiec placed 2nd ahead of Mäkinen. Behind Oestreich Hahn had to be satisfied with the 5th place and the other places were won by Vrsecky, Albacete, Lacko, Körber and Blaise. The Championship had therefore been decided. Hahn leads uncatchable with 511 points ahead of Albacete (460), Oestreich (311), Lacko (307), Vrsecky (267) and Bösiger (257).
