Preliminary Report Le Mans

10. October 2012Le Mans - Before the final races of the 11th race of the FIA European Truckracing Championship in Le Mans takes place on Saturday and Sunday, someone will be in the center of attention. He has been the three-time European Champion – and also the best race-by-race pilot – but this year he absolutely has nothing to do with competing for the title. His name is Gerd Körber, also known as, “Mr. Truckracing”. The German Iveco- driver from the Schwabentruck-Team based in Ulm recently became a dad. Her name is Serafina and she might at some point in time take over Ellen Lohr’s role.
Both MAN drivers, Jochen Hahn (GER) and Antonio Albacete (ESP) will be the only ones battling over the title. The German title holder has an extraordinary comfortable starting position: He has an advantage of 29 points. But even Hahn says that nothing has been decided yet. In 2007, The Swiss Markus Bösiger had an advantage of over 30 points when he competed in the final race, but his then Buggyra Freightliner started showing major technical problems. The whole season the race truck had not shown any of these problems. In the end the Swiss won the Championship with only one-point advantage – after a decision made by the Stewarts. Not only Hahn will be thinking back to this incident, but certainly Albacete, because he had been the underdog in this race. And that way he might even be getting his hopes but, thinking why should it not happen again that I can catch up on a seemingly impossible advantage?!
Overall there are 24 drivers listed for Le Mans, including 4 race-by-race drivers – apart from Körber also the Russian Juri Egorov, who will be driving the Buggyra Freightliner, which Michal Matejovsky (CZE) had driven the last time. Egorov and his compatriot, Mike Konovalov, announced that they would soon try to establish a Russian team.
The 24 Heures Camions in Le Mans do not only show truckracing, they also include a mixture of motorsports, show, carnival, trade fair etc. Especially Saturday night has a lot to offer: A truck pageant, competitions between mechanics, a deafening show on the start-finish line, huge fireworks and a concert at the end. Concerning the agenda and also the temperatures this will be a contrast to the 30 C° we had in Jamara, because we will need winter clothes for Le Mans.
