Sunday in Zolder – part 1

23. September 2012Zolder - Traditionally the race on Sunday in Zolder starts a little bit later. On the grounds of the race track is a little chapel and on Sunday mornings they hold a service there. Thus, the second day of the 9th race of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship started at 10:05 a.m. with a warm-up session.
It was cloudy and the temperature was 10 C°. Almost two hours later the second timed practice took place. The temperatures had gotten a little warmer and the lap times improved as well. The MKR Renault driver Markus Oestreich (GER) drove the fastest lap and took it easier after that. His Swiss teammate Markus Bösiger was almost one second slower and also turned straight into the pit lane in order to spare the tires. Most of the top drivers turned into the pit lane early, because they felt sure to be among the top ten. Especially for Bösiger it got really tight at the end – with seven-hundredth he barely placed 10th. The remaining places for the SuperPole were won by the two Czechs David Vrsecky (Freightliner) and Adam Lacko (Renault) ahead of the three MAN drivers Dominique Lacheze (FRA), Norbert Kiss (HUN) and Jochen Hahn (GER), as well as Anthony Janiec (FRA) in his Renault, the Spaniard Antonio Albacete and the German René Reinert (both MAN).
One got the impression that not all of the drivers had played all their cards and this came true in the following SuperPole. Hahn improved by 2 seconds and turned into the pit lane after a cool-down lap. That smelled of the Pole. Most of the competitors drove another quick lap and some even improved some more – especially Albacete. In the last moment he snatched the pole position from the German. The starting positions 3, 4 and 5 went to the teammates Lacko, Bösiger and Oestreich followed by Vrsecky, Kiss, Lacheze, Reinert and Janiec.
