Smolensk – Preliminary Report

Smolensk – Preliminary Report

03. August 2010It is a tradition that about one week before the start of each FIA round a preliminary report is posted on this website, providing latest news and information in regard to the participants and the programme etc. But the Smolensk event is completely different. This time there is hardly any official information available, but instead the focus is on the journey – a trip more complicated than ever before in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship
The teams of the “Truck Battle Russia – Smolensk 2010“ will travel in different groups heading for their collective meeting place Zilupe in Latvia. The biggest convoy is the Bernau group with a total of 18 vehicles. Their first assembly point was Frankfurt / Oder, and yesterday morning around 8 o’clock they set out for Poland, accompanied by a Kamiono TV film crew. But the traffic chaos in Warsaw caused the convoy to break up and they lost sight of each other. Some of the roads indicated by the navigation systems were closed to trucks. Luck was with those who recalled that perhaps their trucks’ weight did not exceed 19.9 tons. Nevertheless, by mid-evening all the members of the group had turned up at NordTruck, the MAN dealer in Bialystok who was kind enough to provide all the sanitary facilities. The next morning – after a good night’s rest – the convoy set off for Latvia, the next stage of their journey.
