Thursday on the Ring

Thursday on the Ring

23. July 2009Nürburgring - Fortunately the Nürburgring was spared from the thunderstorms which hit large parts of Germany. There were only some heavy rain showers this morning and late in the evening. While the RaceTrucks were on the track doing laps, it stayed dry. And the trucks were on the track for a very long time. At 10:00 a.m. they started with the so-called VIP drivings. That’s for those fans who gladly pay a three-figure sum for the opportunity to sit in a RaceTruck as co-driver. Around Christmas those tickets are already sold out every year. After the drivings for the press, teams and industry there was an additional one-hour free practice at 3:30 p.m. This meant that the pilots were sitting at the wheel for six and a half hours, interrupted only for refuelling and refilling of water, because, as we know, the amount of water a RaceTruck needs for cooling the brakes is many times as much as its diesel consumption.
But also in the last session almost everybody held his cards close to his chest. There weren’t any official times, and the times of their opponents the teams clocked were of little relevance because of their great inconstancy.
Otherwise – same as always – Thursday on the Ring was not a time for leisure hours. While in the industrial estate some of the tents, pavilions and stalls were already set up, in most other places the works were in full swing. As the construction crew said, they will be working all night, as usual, and on Friday morning when the crowds flock to the Ring, everything will be spick and span.
