Donington and the Consequences

20. June 2008It took a whole week, but now the teams got an official email from the FIA informing them that the round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship in Donington was definitely cancelled. When the first rumours were circulating about problems with this event, several officials already stated that – should the organizers really cancel the event – there wouldn’t be any more chances to hold a round of the European Championship in Great Britain in the near future. The people most annoyed were the sponsors and the representatives of the industry. A lot of them had already worked out their plans for the races in Britain which would have been the first in 9 years. The teams, drivers and mechanics have got mixed feelings on the subject. Especially those who bear no relation to the UK and have no sponsor obligations to fulfil, felt somehow positive about the matter: saving great costs, a break of nearly 7 weeks between the TGP on the Ring and Most, and many people remember reluctantly that in Donington the water supply for the teams was stored in big barrels which normally were used as drinking trough for the numerous cows on the surrounding pastures. But supposedly the infrastructure changed for the better in the meantime. However, when it comes down to it, everybody realizes that a cancellation at short notice has a negative impact on the series. With the round held in Donington they would have come closer to their aim “10 races in 10 countries”.
