No End in Sight

No End in Sight

01. November 2007It was not only the most exciting truck racing seasons, but apparently it will also become the longest – and the most contradictory one. But no matter who will eventually become the champion in the end – he will certainly not be well and truly happy about it. Right now Antonio Albacete is again considered to be European Champion. Two weeks after the race the National Spanish Motorsports Association negotiated this matter. And reportedly the meeting took about five hours which was even longer than the discussion in Jarama the night after the race. After more than one week they came to a decision, and by now the teams involved were informed in writing, too. Cepsa’s appeal against the 10 seconds penalty for Antonio Albacete – which the Spaniard got for attacking David Vrsecky, Markus Bösiger’s team mate at Buggyra – was granted. This means that the title defender again would swap places with Gerd Körber. Hence, for the last race of the season he would get 15 instead of 12 points for his second position behind Jochen Hahn. Consequently, the Cepsa pilot would have 380 points – 2 more points than Markus Bösiger. But the FIA seems not yet to be absolutely positive about this matter. Three days after this decision was made in Madrid, the Swiss Markus Bösiger is still listed as the leader of the overall standing – and thus the champion – on the web site of the International Motorsports Association.
Needless to say that Buggyra has immediately lodged an appeal addressed to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) in Paris against the decision of the National Spanish Motorsports Association. But whatever the outcome – it is to be feared that these occurrences have inflicted wounds that will not mend easily. And a photograph as above, showing three smiling opponents, could soon be history.
