Sunday at the Hungaroring Part 2 - Kiss wins race 3

13. June 2021Hungaroring - Norbert Kiss took his first win of the season with a dominant drive in dream weather. The Hungarian ace made it into, and out of, the first corner in the lead but it took him a few laps thereafter to really pull away from Lenz. The German was determined to play it safe, acknowledging his rival’s near-invincibility on his home circuit. Lacko, in P3, had got the jump on Albacete into T2, and that decided the relative positions of the leading quartet till the flag fell. With none of Kiss’s three followers confident of being able to mount a challenge, their priorities soon shifted to securing their positions in the points.
After an age – 45 seconds behind Norbi at the finish – came another quartet led by Hahn, who you can be sure never envisaged himself ever having to defend P5 for all he’s worth. For the flock of privileged fans allowed onto the grandstand, here was a double treat, a sporting spectacle like no other. Bodywork flew in every direction, but the scrap was as legit as it gets. Brereton attacked Hahn on more than one occasion, forcing the six-times champion to draw on all his 20 years of racing trucks to stay ahead.
Following vulture-like at intervals of a second each came Halm and Calvet. But Hahn and Brereton weren’t about to make easy meat of themselves either, and they hurtled to a photo finish, the German a hair’s-breadth 0.116s ahead.
Halm came home in P7, followed by Calvet, who would now be in pole position for the fourth and final race. Kursim and Faas collected the consolation points.
Brereton topped the Goodyear Cup standings, ahead of Calvet and Faas. The exclusively MAN-powered podium for teams had Team Titan (Albacete / Kiss), Löwenpower (Lenz / Anderson), and Buggyra Racing (Calvet / Lacko).
