Saturday at the Hungaroring Part 3 – Race cancelled after Faas finishes in the barriers on first lap

12. June 2021Hungaroring - The start grid for Race 2 in the FIA ETRC has the top eight from the earlier race line up in reverse order. Reinert’s Iveco was on pole, with the tankpool24 Scania of Steffen Faas alongside. When the lights turned green and away they went, Reinert beat Faas to the first corner. The Scania pilot had the hard-charging pack hurtling towards his rear. At the apex of the narrowing T1 he was hit on the inside, spinning the Scania almost 270°. The rest of the field sped past on either side, but no further damage appears to have been done. Faas recovered in an instant and swung back into the chase.
He was on a short downhill straight that leads into a continuously descending left-hander, when at the very point at which one turns in, the Scania ploughed straight ahead, its front wheels locked and its tyres skidding and leaving dark tyre tracks across the painted asphalt runoff, till it collided head-on with the tyre barrier, its momentum causing it to mount the Armco railing and come to rest astride the flattened fence.
The red flags were out in a flash.
The immaculately turned-out Scania had turned into a sorry wreck, but Faas himself jumped out unhurt and was rushed to the medical centre for a physical.
It was later determined that the crash was due to damage the truck had sustained in the collision in the first corner.
By then, the stewards had already announced that the race would not be restarted considering the time it was going to take to rebuild the safety barrier.
