Saturday at the Hungaroring Part 2 – Lenz wins Race 1 by huge margin from Hahn

12. June 2021Hungaroring - The start of the first race of the season was nice and clean, if you ignore the goings-on towards the rear of midfield.
At the front Kiss immediately made it clear that he’d be calling the shots, so Lenz had to settle for the role of follower. A contact with Lacko’s Buggyra, meanwhile, forced Hahn’s Iveco wide in the first corner and the wily Czech lost no time snatching P3, but the seasoned German succeeded in retaking that position only a couple of laps later.
The race had suddenly come alive. But - just as suddenly, the hearts of all the Hungarian fans in attendance sank as the bright red #41 MAN slowed rapidly and peeled off into pit lane. A pipe had ruptured, sapping the homeboy of power.
Not long after, the Iveco of his one-time teammate André Kursim also slowly rolled into the pits, probably as a consequence of the collisions on the opening lap.
Duelling each other caused Hahn and Lacko to lose touch with the leaders, and this now played to Lenz’s advantage. With nobody behind him and nobody in front, the MAN pilot had the race in his hands, and he took the flag a whopping 10 seconds ahead of Hahn and Lacko, who were followed home by Albacete, Halm, Anderson, Faas, Brereton, Reinert, and Calvet – Faas and the Frenchman less than two seconds apart.
Long after the finish, Brereton was given a time penalty that dropped the Englishman to P10 and promoted Reinert and Calvet by one position each. That meant Reinert would be in pole position for the following race.
Anderson took top spot in the Goodyear Cup classification ahead of Faas and Brereton, and
Löwenpower (Anderson / Lenz) took the team honours followed by Die Bullen von Iveco (Hahn / Steffi Halm) and Buggyra Racing“ (Calvet / Lacko).
