Sunday in Le Mans Part 3 - Lenz wins Race 4

29. September 2019Le Mans - It looked like it could rain anytime during the weekend’s final race. Thankfully, not a drop fell, but a strong wind sweeping in gusts across Circuit Bugatti made it rather uncomfortable for the 60,000-odd spectators.
Anderson was on pole, with fellow Brit Janes alongside on the front row. While neither has so much experience starting a European-championship race from the front, Anderson did a splendid job to take the lead. Janes, on the other hand, made a poor start and lost six places in the first few corners. Anderson managed to keep his pursuers at bay for one lap. Lenz meanwhile overtook compatriot Steffi Halm and, in short order and entirely unspectacularly, his British MAN colleague as well. A little later Anderson seemed to have given up the fight – within one lap he fell to P7, even as Lenz built a cosy cushion over Halm. Even when Hahn passed his teammate to head the chase, Lenz continued to stretch his lead inexorably till he crossed the line more than 10 seconds ahead at the flag. Hahn and Halm completed an all-German podium. If that wasn’t enough, Kursim came home fourth, barely ahead of Albacete. The Spaniard had Lacko, his fiercest rival for second place in the overall standings, sniffing at his crash guard throughout.
Anderson finished seventh, ahead of Janes, Recuenco, and José Eduardo Rodrigues, who picked up one point for P10.
The most spectacular events took place at the beginning and towards mid-race. Mercedes pilot Citignola tangled with Reinert on the opening lap, pitching the Iveco off the track, from where it limped back to the pits in a state of near breakdown. Citignola’s truck also bore scars from the dust-up, which lost the young German one position, but he resolutely resumed, only to be blindsided by a drive-through penalty that tossed him to the bottom of the order.
The other fireworks came from Citignola’s tankpool24 teammate Kiss. The Hungarian had started 18th and last as a consequence of his exit from Race 3, and worked his way up into the Top 10, when the turbo on his Mercedes blew spectacularly on the main straight, right in front of the packed grandstand, cutting an admirable advance short.
Anderson took top points in the Grammer Truck Cup, ahead of Janes and Recuenco.
Löwen Power (Albacete / Lenz) was the top team, followed by „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Steffi Halm) and Buggyra Racing 1969 (Janes / Lacko).
Long after the finish, the classification was revised. Albacete was given a five second penalty, which saw him switch places with Lacko, whom he now leads by only three points.
Hahn has already won the championship and has 318 points. Albacete is on 225 and Lacko on 222, followed by Halm (188), Lenz (158), Kiss (156), Reinert (138), and Kursim (129).
