Sunday at the Nürburgring Part 2 – Hahn wins race 3

21. July 2019Nürburgring - Summertime, and the living is easy – anything but, for the jittery truck racers on the grid for Race 3. The start itself was uneventful, but the big bang came in the sharp right-hander at the entrance to the Mercedes Arena. There were spins, exchanges of paintwork, flying bits of plastic, and some rather severe impacts that drove the trucks affected into premature retirement.
Hahn slingshotted out of T2 in the lead, while Kiss, who’d started alongside, was caught in the tohubohu and dropped 14 positions in fewer seconds. Halm hotfooted it after her „Bullen“ teammate, with Albacete’s MAN pretty much affixed to the crash guard of her Iveco.
The championship leader did no more than was necessary to stay in front, and his margin of victory, around 2.5 seconds, belied the evident fact that he was the absolute master of this race. His Iveco colleague, by contrast, had to do everything in her power to stay ahead of Albacete. Unfortunately for her, the speed limiter on her truck malfunctioned, and after three overspeed infringements she was handed a drive-through penalty, which she took on the final lap. That put her down in P15 in the final classification.
The fight for P4, or what became P3 following Halm’s demotion, involved Lacko and Lenz. The German was clearly the quicker of the two according to most observers, and he also drove the fastest lap of the race. But every time he attempted to overtake, Lacko moved across to block him, the Czech eventually crossing the line a snout ahead to take P3.
Körber came home in fifth, barely ahead of Reinert. Kiss meanwhile had made an advance with P8 as his singular goal, that position bringing with it the promise of pole for Race 4. Just past mid-race the Mercedes pilot was up in P9, with Kursim in front of him. A lap or two later he snuck ahead in a brilliant manoeuvre. What the two didn’t know then was that Steffi Halm would drop out of the top 10, and so their fight only landed Kursim on pole.
The two remaining places in the points went to MAN pilots José Rodrigues (POR) and Thomas Robineau (FRA). The Frenchman was first among the Chrome-category pilots in the Grammer Truck Cup classification, ahead of Buggyra pilot Oly Janes (GBR) and Spaniard Luis Recuenco (MAN).
Löwen Power (Albacete / Lenz) took the team honours yet again, with „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Halm) and Buggyra Racing (Janes / Lacko) first and second runners-up.
