Saturday at the Slovakia Ring Part 3 - Brereton holds off Hahn for magnificent win

14. July 2018Slovakiaring - The day was past its hottest, the temperature was back at 30° and the asphalt was now cooling, but still at 50°. You could see during the race just how much the tyres suffer in these conditions, under the severe stresses imposed on them by the high speeds in the curves. Drivers who aren’t so hard on their rubber have a distinct advantage. So it wasn’t surprising that Steffi Halm, who’d been allowed a new replacement following the complete destruction of a steer-axle tyre in Race 1, drove the fastest lap of the race by far.
It all started quite turbulently. Polesitter Brereton made a clean getaway, but Lenz made an even better one. The German MAN pilot got the better of Iveco rival Kursim and ran 2nd alongside his Reinert Adventure teammate René. Behind the two of them, old teammates Kursim and Kiss clashed, forcing the young Iveco pilot to run wide. The Iveco collected Lacko’s Freightliner and the two skidded into the gravel. They managed to wriggle free, but then had to chase after the rapidly receding field.
Reinert had, meanwhile, decided the battle for 2nd place in his favour, and now led a pack of four in pursuit of race leader Brereton – but there was no catching up.
Hahn’s impatience soon got the better of him and the bantam from Altensteig dispatched Lenz and, in short order, Reinert as well. But Brereton proved to be a tough cookie, altogether impossible even for the four-times champion to subdue. The Englishman led Hahn and Reinert over the line for a flawless victory.
Over the last two laps Kiss’s black Mercedes was all over the rear of Lenz’s MAN, but this time the German wasn’t going to give in, or so it appeared. In the earlier race the Hungarian and Lacko had together overtaken him on the final lap, summarily demoting him from 3rd to 5th place. This time round it was no different – all he could achieve was 5th. For Kiss, all it took was to step up the pressure and snatch 4th away.
Albacete finished 6th, ahead of Steffi Halm, who had stormed up from the rear, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. Lacko recovered from his early excursion into the gravel to pick up three points for an 8th-place finish ahead of Coleman und Faas.
A washed-out but overjoyed Brereton had to endure two podium ceremonies, because he also won the Grammer Truck Cup competition ahead of Coleman and Faas.
Reinert Adventure (Lenz / Reinert) took the team honours, followed by „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ and RS-Racing (Brereton / Smith).
Hahn continues to lead the championship standings with 161 points. Albacete is now second with 112, ahead of Lacko (110), Kiss (105), Halm (90), Lenz (79), Reinert (74), und Kursim (59).
