Sunday at the Hungaroring Part 3 – Reinert wins his first race after return

17. June 2018Hungaroring - A thin layer of cloud spread across the sky and the temperature climbed to 33°, but the track mercifully did not heat up any further. The 34,000 spectators witnessed an overwhelmingly disciplined race with no heated tempers.
Polesitter Lenz and teammate René, starting in 2nd, ran side by side all the way through Sectors 1 and 2 till Reinert powered out of one of the curves quicker to take the lead. Lenz stayed right on Reinert’s heels throughout, but it was clear that neither would do anything to jeopardise the other’s prospects. It was a straightforward one-two for Reinert Adventure, helped by the fact that Kiss and Lacko kept up their duel till the end, slowing them down and allowing the MAN teammates to make good their escape to victory.
Hahn meanwhile latched on and lurked, hoping for Lacko and Kiss to tangle. But the quad-champ’s hopes evaporated – quite literally – in thin air three laps to the finish. A massive loss in air pressure, on which several of a race truck’s systems are dependent, forced Hahn to retire. Kiss eventually held out for a secure 3rd, ahead of Lacko.
Kursim finished 5th again after an uneventful race. He was followed home by Smith, Albacete, Brereton, Halm, and Anderson. Iveco’s warrioress defended her 9th position despite smoking tyres. Her ambitions were set quite a bit higher; for several laps she had her evidently somewhat slower Iveco colleague Kursim in her sights, but just when it looked like she’d make her move, her truck was hit in the rear, robbing her of momentum. A metal part bent in the collision pressed into the right rear tyres, and in the circumstances 9th was as good a position to finish in as any.
The honours for the highest-scoring team went – but naturally – to Reinert Adventure (Lenz / Reinert). Tankpool24 Racing (Kiss / Faas) finished runners-up and RS-Racing (Brereton / Smith) third.
The Grammer Truck Cup podium was an all-British lockout, Brereton winning ahead of Anderson and Terry Gibbon (MAN).
Hahn heads off to the Truck Grand Prix at the Nürburgring with 95 points, followed by Halm and Kiss (both 64), Lacko (58), Lenz (54), Reinert (47), Albacete (39), and Kursim (37).
