Sunday at the Hungaroring Part 2 - Hahn has clear run from pole to flag for win 4

17. June 2018Hungaroring - The mercury had climbed to almost 30° and the asphalt was double that at the start of Sunday’s first race. Hahn took the lead, followed by Smith, Lacko, and Kiss all a truck length apart. Behind them things began to get chaotic. After a few hundred metres Albacete, Halm, and Reinert got into a scrap. That didn’t affect the running order, but the four trucks in front made full capital to establish an unassailable advantage. On the first lap, too, Lenz got a mighty whack on the rear that swung his MAN around and off the track in a cloud of smoke. The young German suddenly found himself at the end of the field. The frontrunners meanwhile kept stretching the gap to the rest, now mutually spaced such that none could do another any harm.
Hahn finished a clear pole-to-flag winner; Smith was 2nd and Lacko 3rd. Kiss was left with a thankless 4th.
The remaining positions continued to be contested till the final lap. Kursim skirted all the trouble ahead of him to make it up to 5th, followed by Halm, Reinert, and – initially – Albacete as well. The Spaniard had to throttle back because of some evident technical problem, but towards the end of the race he was held back by tyre damage on the left rear, which then forced him to retire on the penultimate lap.
Kursim on the other hand resisted Halm’s attacks for several laps before he was finally subdued by his Iveco colleague. Reinert too closed in, but the MAN pilot ran out of road before he could go in for the kill and crossed the line in 7th.
Sascha Lenz drove back into the picture with the race of a lifetime. After his 360° spin the MAN pilot had to start all over again from the rear of the field, but it was amazing to watch him scythe through half the field for an 8th-place finish that also netted him pole position for the final race of the weekend.
English MAN pilots Jamie Anderson and Terry Gibbon collected the remaining points.
The cup for top team went to „Die Bullen von Iveco Magirus“ (Hahn / Halm) aheaf of RS-Racing (Smith / Brereton) and Buggyra Racing 1969 (Lacko / Janes).
Anderson was the top finisher in the Grammer Truck Cup, followed by Gibbon and German Steffen Faas (Mercedes).
