Coupe de France Camions – Friday in Nogaro

23. June 2017Nogaro - The last weekend in June is the traditional time for truck racing in Nogaro, a small town in the southwest of France. Even though this year’s races on Circuit Paul Armagnac don’t count towards the FIA European Truck Racing Championship, the entry list has a massive 35 trucks. In addition to the French national championship – Coupe de France Camions, – there are the four invitation races featuring teams and drivers from Great Britain, Finland and Spain.
The Number 1 topic of discussion here, however, hasn’t been the racing but the weather. When the first teams arrived on Wednesday the temperature in the shade was 40°C and the asphalt in the paddock a plastic 55°.
The sun was every bit as severe on Thursday, and even more so today, the 25° ambient feeling oppressive at times without the slightest whiff of breeze.
In addition to the press rides, there were a number of free practice sessions on the schedule. Everyone’s attention was focused on the young drivers, particularly the two French teenagers Louis Meric, 17, and Teo Calvet, a year his junior. As it turned out, they were worryingly quick on their first outing, recording the fourth- and eighth-quickest times.
The participants of the invitation races were concentrated on familiarising themselves with the layout of the circuit. It’s not their result here that’s of primary importance; they are enjoy truck racing.
The day will conclude with the traditional race truck parade through the streets of this picture-postcard town in the Gascony, culminating in the open-air bash at market square at which the Floc flows and the fans and drivers freely fraternise.
