Sunday in Misano Part 1 – Lacko takes the pole

28. May 2017Misano - The second and final day of the second round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Italy’s Adriatic coast began just as you’d expect it to in a southern European seaside resort at this time of year, with clear skies and lots of sunshine.
The temperatures during warm-up in the early morning were nice and bracing, and the track surface would take a while yet to (over)heat. Czech Adam Lacko (Buggyra Freightliner) and Hungarian Norbert Kiss in his tankpool24 Mercedes went out and straightway recorded lap times within 2:03s – on used tyres.
But these times aren’t indicative of anything; the real performance pointers would come later, in Qualifying 2. By then the mercury had cracked the 25°C ceiling in the shade, and the asphalt had warmed to over 40°.
Steffi Halm and her MAN-in-blue set the top time, 2:03.212s, immediately after she had an earlier timesheet-topping lap cancelled for exceeding track limits. Lacko, Kiss, Iveco pilot Jochen Hahn (GER), Spaniard Antonio Albacete (MAN), German Iveco pilot Gerd Körber, and his compatriot Sascha Lenz (MAN) rolled back into pit lane after a single flying lap each, all confident of a secure spot in the Super Pole. Only seven tenths separated Lenz from his Reinert Adventure teammate Halm.
These were presently joined by the three MAN pilots José Rodrigues (PRT), Thomas Robineau (FRA), and Eduardo Rodrigues (PRT).
In the Super Pole Lacko wasted no time blitzing the competition with a 2:02.594s. The closest Hahn could come was two tenths. The bantam from Altensteig later said he’d given it all he had; there was nothing could gain by hazarding another try – his tyres would, after all, have to last the full Sunday.
None of the others could manage sub-2:03 times on their couple of hot laps.
Kiss was third-quickest, followed by Albacete, Lenz, Halm, Körber, Robineau, and José and Eduardo Rodrigues.
