Friday in Misano

26. May 2017Misano - The truck racers usually have the Friday free at the Misano round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship – the race weekends here are traditionally two-day events. This time they’ve had to go into action somewhat earlier than they’ve been accustomed to. The FIA has introduced a new telemetry device to monitor the trucks’ conformance to the 160 km/h speed limit and together with the teams some more test sessions of the system were scheduled for Misano.
In this weather a visit to the beach was definitely more enticing, but the racers dutifully went at the job in their sweltering cockpits, the outside temperature touching 35°C and the track measured at up to 55° in places.
The Scania of Dutchman Erwin Kleinnagelvoort is missing from the 13-strong entry list, but the MAN of Frenchman Thomas Robineau makes a per-race appearance.
There’s also been a last-minute change in the roster at Buggyra International, whose regular second driver David Vršecký remains unable to participate. In Spielberg the Czech’s place was taken by Slovene Alen Draganovic; here, Freightliner #33 will have Alen’s father Enes in the cockpit.
Even if all they were doing was test the new speedcontrol, it was the frontrunners in Spielberg who once again set the pace, foremost among them defending champ Jochen Hahn in his Iveco. Next quickest were compatriot Steffi Halm, her marque-of-a-MAN colleague Antonio Albacete (ESP), and the other „Bulle von Iveco Magirus“, Gerd Körber. But these times aren’t indicative; the top drivers will only go flat out Saturday in the Super Pole that determines their starting order on the grid.
