08. January 2017The 2016 season of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship may only really have ended with the Christmas get-togethers at various teams, but the old football adage – “After the game is before the game” – holds as well for the truck racing season as a whole.
The teams’ commercial staffs have returned from the holidays straight into the thick of budget negotiations with sponsors for the coming season. But the mechanics have already been at work on the 2017 trucks for weeks now.
The tankpool24 team has once again set its sights high. The privately owned outfit, with the only race trucks in the ETRC to sport the three-pointed star on their grilles, isn’t just hoping to repeat its successes of the past season; indeed, Markus Bauer and his merry band, Mercedes enthusiasts to a man, are determined to do even better.
Last year they were able to lure Stefan Honens, one of the most successful race truck constructors of all time, and then, when the 2014 and 2015 champion Norbert Kiss came aboard, expectations were understandably high. As it turned out they were all met – and exceeded.
The Hungarian ace picked up nine podium finishes, netted 214 points, and secured fifth place in the championship – more altogether than anyone had dreamed of.
Kiss and his young German teammate André Kursim also jointly amassed 294 points towards the team championship.
MB Motorsport plans to continue with this constellation for the 2017 campaign. The goals, however, will be set somewhat higher.
