Most Preliminary Report

01. September 2016Most - Last year the entire truck racing circus moved from Most in the Czech Republic to Hungary; this year it’s exactly the other way round, from the Hungaroring to the Autodrom for the 6th round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship.
The very same field from the Hungaroring will regroup in Most - plus, notably, German MAN racer René Reinert, who was forced to cancel his participation in Hungary at very short notice. The Lusatian fleetowner’s goal this season was to maintain third place in the overall standings, but having to pass up the chance to score at the Hungaroring has proved a rather severe setback. Meanwhile, home hero Norbert Kiss saw outstanding success, taking over third place. The defending champ earned 46 points in Hungary and now has 26 more to his FIA account than Reinert.
Even Frenchman Anthony Janiec in his Lion MAN has moved seven points up ahead of the German - a gap that can be closed. Closing in on Kiss, however, is going to be a tougher proposition. The tankpool24 team has made the Mercedes race truck a frontrunner far sooner than anyone imagined it could. The Hungarian might very well tip the scales in the championship because he’s the only one that can actually keep up with the two title aspirants, German Jochen Hahn (MAN) and Czech Adam Lacko (Buggyra Freightliner).
And even if the bantam from Altensteig, who pools his points with Reinert towards the team championship, raced solo in Hungary, he scored high enough to keep Team Reinert Adventure way atop the team rankings with a cushion of 59 points.
Autodrom Most is acknowledged Buggyra territory, and everyone expects a major offensive from the Czech outfit. But Hahn also knows this circuit like the back of his hand - after all, he tests here several times a year, most recently a fortnight ago. It was no surprise really that he collected just as many points (50) here last year as Lacko did.
Frankie Vojtíšek, having come off a disappointing no-fault crash on the approach to the flag in last Saturday’s second race, will hope to get through his home races unscathed. His MAN race truck has since got a new cab, the damaged one standing sentry at the team’s marquee.
With only a couple of exceptions the paddock was almost fully up on Wednesday evening. Even if, at times like this, most take some time to relax, every thoroughgoing truck racer will be impatient to get out onto the track and let it rip.
But they’re going to have to hold their horses - first up Friday afternoon is the excursion into the Most town centre.
