Friday in Misano

27. May 2016Misano - The glorious summer weather only served to accentuate the already relaxed atmosphere leading up to the races of the 2nd round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship at the Misano World Circuit on Italy’s Adriatic coast. A surfeit of sun and the thermometer at a toasty 30° was enough to propel all those who weren’t required to be in the paddock (or who’d decided to go shopping), out onto the beach.
Even when the paddock had for the most part been fully erected on Thursday evening, there was still lots left to do, and not only for the mechanics.
Several meetings had been scheduled – of the Sporting Working Group, the Technical Working Group, and the team managers, – and in between all a parade of the race trucks for the TV, for which 17 trucks turned out. They included, in addition to the 13 FIA full-season trucks, the three driven by French race-by-race pilots Jean-Claude Labadie (Renault), Jérémy Robineau (MAN), and Dominique Orsini (Mercedes), and the second Schwabentruck Iveco, which was brought here only as a showpiece.
It’s obvious that no inference could be drawn from these laps about how well, and indeed whether, a part would function – or not – at race pace. That notwithstanding, many of the racers weren’t holding back, very clearly testing vital systems of their trucks, the brakes for example.
But which of them has been able to improve their trucks since Spielberg and by just how much, will only be known at noon Saturday after the SuperPole.
