Saturday in Spielberg Part 2 – Hahn converts in characteristic style

30. April 2016Spielberg - The way he dominated proceedings in the SuperPole, Jochen Hahn’s start-to-flag victory in the first race was no surprise. But it took only half of the first lap for the pecking order to be decided. The two MAN pilots continued to pull out ahead of the field, without apparently needing to exhaust the full performance potential of their trucks. The fight for third place was, by contrast, considerably more exciting. Smith had snatched 3rd place from home hero Altenstrasser at the start, and the Iveco pilot was determined to recapture a position he believed was rightfully his. But blocked as he was by the equally determined Englishman at every turn, even the loud support from the stands proved to no avail.
Lenz drove home relatively relaxed in 5th, even though he had Körber steadily creep up on him. Till halfway into the race Lenz had two masters of their art breathing down his neck — Kiss and Lacko. But then, in the curve that truncates the truck race loop from the rest of the Red Bull Ring, the two collided heavily. The Buggyra and the Mercedes both landed off the track, while their immediate pursuers piled ahead.
Lacko was the quicker to recover, losing only one place, while the Hungarian fell behind by three. And when the Czech overtook Robineau, he was back in 7th. Kiss, on the other hand, couldn’t make it past the Frenchman and had to be content with 9th. Robineau would start the second race on pole - Kiss had resigned himself to that prospect. But then an edict from race control turned it around for him.
Smith was awarded a 30-second penalty for the start, which dropped him to 10th behind Ellen Lohr. Altenstrasser moved up to 3rd – albeit after the prizegiving – and the rest behind him likewise moved up a slot each.
Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert) was the top team, trailed by Buggyra (Lacko / Forman) and Lion Truck Racing / Lenz (Janiec / Lenz).
