Sunday in Zolder Part 3 – Victory for Vršecký

20. September 2015Zolder - The final race of the weekend was run in the most conducive of conditions in the presence of 13,000 spectators. Polesitter Robineau had no chance against Vršecký in the race to the first corner. A little later he allowed himself to be overtaken by compatriot Janiec, albeit not without a fight, which cost both of them quite a bit of time. A delay twice European champion Vršecký cleverly capitalised on to build his lead. A lap later Robineau had lost even 3rd place - to Kiss. The Hungarian, who’d started the race in 8th, was on the second lap already on course for the podium, while Robineau had fallen back to 7th.
Lacko meanwhile was proving to be the exact opposite. After the fire and loss of diesel in the earlier race, his Buggyra was repaired and ready at the last moment and the Czech had to start the race in last place.
In the course of a few laps he had already ploughed his way up through half of the field. Two laps before the close he had made up 10 places to 5th and was climbing, when engine failure forced his Freightliner out of the running. Probable cause: a defective injector.
Kiss meanwhile made bold to overcome Vršecký, but the Buggyra pilot brought all his considerable truck racing experience to bear, blocking his rapacious rival’s every attack to take victory in the final race.
Reinert’s team celebrated his 3rd place in wild fashion. The MAN pilot had rather unremarkably made his way up from 5th on the grid to 3rd, and from there driven uncontested onto the podium.
But the battle for 4th place presented a very different picture. Catching up with Janiec is one thing; overtaking the Frenchman is something else altogether, and everybody in the ETRC knows that.
Time and again, champions of no mean standing have been frustrated in the attempt; this time it was the turn of Albacete and Hahn, who had to content themselves with 5th and 6th behind their impossible MAN colleague.
Robineau finished 7th ahead of Lohr and Lenz.
Rehfeld took the final point available.
The Mercedes pilot had damaged the front fascia of his truck in a duel with Dutch Scania pilot Erwin Kleinnagelvoort, fallen to the rear of the field, and then fought his way back up into the points, finishing just ahead of his tankpool24 teammate André Kursim.
Oxxo-Lion (Kiss / Janiec) was the winning team for the second time today, followed by Buggyra (Vršecký / Lacko) and Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert).
Kiss with 508 points now leads the championship standings by a good 149 points from Hahn (359), Lacko (356), Vršecký (333), Albacete (288), and Reinert (196).
