Sunday in Zolder Part 2 – Kiss leads another triumphal procession

20. September 2015Zolder - The beautiful weather held up during Sunday’s first race. The tankpool24 team would have wished for rain, but even more than that, for some more time. The Mercedes trucks needed work till the last second, and both German pilots Roland Rehfeld and André Kursim were like cats on hot bricks. While Kursim barely managed to make it onto the grid, Rehfeld was ready to go a few split seconds too late, with the result that he’d have to take the start from the pit lane and chase after a field that was receding into the distance. It must have been that much more frustrating when, after a magnificent drive, Rehfeld failed to score by a whisker, finishing 11th.
At the front was a picture we are now familiar with when Kiss starts on pole. The Hungarian took the lead when the lights turned green, and that’s where he finished. But behind the MAN pilot a minor drama played out. Lacko was 2nd ahead of Albacete and Hahn. On the fifth lap flames were seen under the Buggyra Freightliner and the truck dumped a lot of oil or diesel. Lacko made straight for the pits, but his truck left a trail of oil on a large stretch of the circuit. None of the drivers in his wake was caught out, however; they’d apparently recognised the situation immediately and taken appropriate action.
The podium was now occupied by Kiss, Albacete, and Hahn. Reinert was in 4th and Vršecký appeared cosy in 5th - till the Czech started to slow over final last third of the race. His pursuers closed in, and on the 10th lap the Buggyra pilot had to let first Janiec and then Lohr pass him. Vršecký managed to salvage 7th by half a second from Robineau.
With his 8th-place finish the Frenchman takes pole for the weekend’s final race.
Lenz and Teodosio were the last two finishers in the points.
Oxxo-Lion (Kiss / Janiec) was the top team, ahead of Reinert Adventure (Hahn / Reinert) and Bernau-Albacete (Lohr / Albacete).
