Friday at the Hungaroring

04. September 2015Hungaroring - There were looks of surprise on many faces at the Hungaroring near Budapest early this morning. It had started to rain. The possibility of precipitation had been forecast only for tomorrow. But the sun broke through in no time and the temperature rose to a pleasant 25°C, at which it stayed level for the whole day.
For the racers at this 7th round of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship activities began at noon with the joyrides for the press and VIPs.
Then there was the additional free practice for an hour, and it surprised nobody when homeboy Norbert Kiss set such a dominating pace - the MAN pilot knows this circuit like the back of his hand. None of the others has driven a race truck on the Hungaroring, none except Czech Frankie Vojtíšek, but that was 25 years ago.
One or the other may have raced or tested here in other series way back when, but never has the concept of home advantage carried as much significance in the FIA ETRC as now on the Hungaroring.
Over the course of the press and VIP rides and during the additional free practice, the field did close the gap to Kiss somewhat, but even so Jochen Hahn (GER), second-quickest in his MAN in free practice, was a whole 1.3 seconds slower.
The second free practice session will take place tomorrow.
